The Section for Science and Technology Studies (STS) is located within the Department of Sociology. Primarily a research unit, STS is dedicated to illuminating different aspects of the co-production of science, technology and society. Particular areas of concern currently include risk governance and environmental policy; science and gender; public learning and engagement with science; and the politics of innovation in general stretching across such fields as new media and information technologies, nano technology, medical and health care technologies as well as security technologies.
STS runs its own Ph D programme while also actively contributing to other undergraduate and advanced level degree programmes. With approaching 20 directly-affiliated members (staff + PhD candidates), the Section has recently expanded through its hosting of the joint GU/CTH initiative (2006-2009) on the Public Learning and Understanding of Science (GC+).
